Why did you choose this program?

I picked this program because I really wanted to do something beneficial with my year off from school. I decided not to go to school right away because I wanted to see the world and give a helping hand to those in need.

It's always been my dream to go to Africa ever since I was a little boy. I was searching programs on the internet and saw a lot of great reviews about IVHQ so I decided to look more closely. I saw that they offered many programs in Africa and thought it would be a life changing experience that I needed. So I booked my flight and started my journey.

What do you tell your friends who are thinking about going abroad?

The advice I give to my friends is something that I wish I had been told a long time ago. A trip like this can really change your perspective on so many things and really open your eyes to the important things in life.

I came out of this trip a changed person and really found what I want to do in my life. I tell all of my friends about this experience and how it really can make a difference not only in the people you're helping out but also in yourself.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

The most important thing I can say to someone going into this program is to not waste a second of the trip. Value every moment because you will miss it so much once your experience is over. Be willing to try new things and put yourself out there, and just have fun.

Everything is a learning experience and immersing yourself in the South African culture is really something special.

What's your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?

It's so hard to pick a favorite because there are so many stories to choose from, but I would have to say my favorite story of the trip was when I came back to school the first day after I got my tattoo.

I decided to get the school crest of Sullivan Primary School tattooed on my arm because these children and staff really changed who I am and this was a way that I could show them just how much they meant to me.

The kids' faces lit up with so much joy when I first showed them and it really was such a special experience to see how much pride they have in their school and in who they are. Just watching them be so excited and happy made me the happiest person on the planet.

What's something you would warn other volunteers about?

I would warn volunteers not to take this trip for the wrong reasons. Really give all that you have to these children because they really need positive role models in their lives and they look up to the volunteers so much.

Throw yourself into the program and give everything you've got. This isn't saying that you can't have a great time in your free time, seeing South Africa and doing a lot of amazing things, but while you're at the program really try and make a difference in every way that you can.
