CAPA london

I had the most amazing semester in London. The classes were interesting and different than anything else I had ever experienced. Largely due to the amazing field studies in many different courses that had us going out doing things I wouldn’t typically do for example a graffiti art walking tour. The housing was excellent in a very safe and residential community. I had a great time exploring London with all the museums, art, food, culture, and especially theater. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to explore, get out of their comfort zone, and up for non traditional learning.

Pros
  • Housing in central London
  • Oyster card for unlimited travel in zones 1+ 2
  • Lots of travel experiences
Cons
  • No dining plan

The most amazing educational experience I have ever received!

Interning in London will forever be the highlight of my time in college. It is so hard to put into words my experience as it was nothing short of incredible. I developed a variety of personal and professional skills that are extremely valuable, as well as life-long friendships with both locals and other students. Experiencing a completely different culture both locally and in the workplace is something that has shaped me tremendously and I cannot wait to visit London again, I miss it every day!

Pros
  • Delicious, diverse, and authentic food everywhere.
  • A beautiful walk every day to my internship site.
  • The freedom to travel and explore different countries.
Cons
  • Keep belongings strapped closely to you and never leave anything unattended.

My experiences with them was next to flawless-- they connect you with someone who guides you through the process and is knowledgeable about internship connections abroad to help find the best one for you specifically. I highly recommend their services if you want to have easy access to an incredible internship experience abroad.

I had the opportunity to network with my internship and create connections that will help in future jobs nationally and internationally!

What was your funniest moment?
We went to Stonehenge and it was the windiest day in modern Stonehenge history and we almost got blown over but it made it so fun!

A Whole New World

My six-week departure for London with the CAPA Global Internship Program was my first time leaving home internationally. As scared as I was and unsure if the trip would really happen for me, I knew that it was the best decision I had ever made. The experience enhanced my time in college and even helped me advance in my academic goals. The Shakespeare course with Robert Ball was a great way to study the art of the playwright himself. I managed to learn 15 plays in a matter of six weeks. It would have taken me six months if I took the course back at my home campus.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have liked to improve my budgeting skills. I did not have much money upon showing up, and my school did not release my funds for my trip until the VERY LAST WEEK that I was there. Get involved in the research and application process of your study abroad program early, I would say a year in advance. That way, you have plenty of time to look into scholarships and save your money until departure day.

Review on the CAPA London: Intern Abroad experience

Interning and working abroad in London was a very transformative experience. I really appreciate the independence that CAPA gave us and the support they gave us throughout the program. They really worked hard in placing me at an internship that fit my needs. I wanted to do social justice, legal, or political oriented work, so they got me an internship at a small judicial nonprofit organization, which was a very fulfilling experience. I was learning about judicial issues around the world, which was different than any other work experience I have ever had. I developed stronger professional skills and learned how to be more self sufficient, figuring out how to budget, get around the city, and balancing my work and class schedules with free time, all while navigating London. The classes emphasized London's socio-historical context, which I found very interesting as a Sociology major. I loved exploring the different neighborhoods of London (Soho, Brick Lane, and Notting Hill were my favorites) throughout my seven weeks and would highly recommend any student to do the same!

What would you improve about this program?
The living arrangements. Though the location, Shephard's Bush, was great, there were a lot of problems in the flats.

Wouldn't change a thing

CAPA made studying abroad in London a breeze-- and worthwhile. It has been about 7 months since my program ended and not a day goes by that I don't think about it. From the CAPA side of things, they connect you with an internship tailored to your interests and skills, it doesn't get much better than that. The classes at the CAPA office are actually enjoyable, I was always eager to go to class. CAPA also provides opportunities not only around London, but around the continent. CAPA informed us about a trip to Paris which I signed up for and it was very organized and I had an amazing time. Our housing was 10/10. Literally if I could go back and pick anywhere in the city, I don't think there was a better place than where we lived. We were a two minute walk from the Camden Market, filled with tons of food and shopping. I miss London everyday and I genuinely don't think the experience would have been the same without CAPA guiding me through.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Get outside of your comfort zone when meeting new people. Take advantage of any opportunities given to socialize with others.

London Internship Abroad

My internship abroad couldn't have been more exciting. Through the CAPA program, I was able to travel to the number one city on my bucket list and partake in my dream internship. Work/life balance was perfect — I had plenty of time to travel and explore London and Europe while receiving a great experience professionally and academically. I met some of my best friends through the program and lived in one of the coolest parts of London. If I hadn't gone through CAPA, there is no way I would've been able to have the experience I did. I was able to experience so many things from new foods, West End shows, football matches at Wembley and so much more. I am now considering working abroad after graduation because I loved it so much! I 100% would recommend this program for anyone considering an internship abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Going abroad can be overwhelming! Take time to explore the city and don't be afraid to pick your colleague's brain about the industry you wish to enter. The experience is so rewarding and you can learn a lot.

Going Abroad: Just Do It!

In the Spring of 2018, I decided to go abroad and study in London. I went through a program called CAPA, short for Center for Academic Programs Abroad, and I couldn't have been happier with my decision. I had a phenomenal experience with CAPA and the classes and internship I got to complete because of the program. I was happy to see that I could take some fun classes while abroad, my personal favorite was British Pop Culture, but i was also able to take classes pertinent to my major, such as a class that focused on women and their role in making history in Modern Europe. For my internship, CAPA placed me in an establishment called ELOP, the East London Out Project, and I got the opportunity to be present for counseling sessions, and plan group activities. Aside from enhancing my professional development, CAPA also placed students in excellent housing, and I got to live in Camden Town, a part of London that is revered for its music and alternative scene. The program also offered free trips, and I got to go to Oxford and Stonehenge thanks to CAPA. Overall, my experience abroad was enhanced by the opportunities offered by CAPA and I would do it again in a heartbeat!
