With IVHQ’s superior pre-departure support services, you’ll gain exclusive access to your own Volunteer Travel Specialist, comprehensive preparation tools and volunteer training before you leave home.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. Sport plays a big role in the lives of young, enthusiastic Kenyans. Many children grow up with very little, but by using sport as an outlet for fun and competition, they gain skills and coordination while enjoying themselves at the same time. As a volunteer on our Sports Education project in Kenya, you’ll help to broaden their knowledge of sports, teach foreign sports and educate them about general fitness, health and wellbeing.

Volunteer in Kenya with IVHQ

Due to lack of support and education around disability awareness in Kenya, many disabled children and adults are kept out of the public eye. As a volunteer on this project, you'll assist with providing daily hands-on support and disability education among families and local communities. This project is well suited to caring and open minded individuals with an interest in helping those with special needs.

If I Had Only Known…

It was a long flight from Los Angeles to Nairobi, Kenya. I didn’t notice. I was too excited.
Thanks to IVHQ, I was going to live and teach in the Maasai community. What an opportunity to immerse myself in this beautiful culture.
I arrived early but it was soon Saturday- Orientation Day. The other volunteers arrived from all over the world. Everyone was so kind and caring. Did IVHQ just attract the nicest people, I wondered?
There were just two of us going to Maasailand. We left for our new ‘home’ for two weeks. We drove down a very bumpy road to Ngong and then further to a rural area. It was quietly beautiful. A family of four greeted us along with a herd of very healthy looking goats.
The next two weeks we’re full of wonder. My lovely roommate and I had each other to go through all the experiences. Primitive living. No running water in the house. No heating. And the ‘toilet shed’ was several yards from the house. My head flashlight was a blessing!
Sundays were Church days. Monday through Friday I was teaching in a school on Ngong.
I cannot tell you in a few words what an extraordinary time I had. Joyful and challenging.
Fifty children in the class of 6-7 year olds. Room for 30. Such a fine teacher. Smart and clever. It took no more than a few minutes to love the children. We had such a good time together.
I was able to contribute to their school supplies; exercise books, pencils, crayons etc. and to buy some equipment for their sports days on Fridays.
I was so difficult to leave them. Time and tears!
IVHQ made me feel completely supported all the time. Their Kenyan team was at the other end of the phone if you needed and they drove us to various events. Viv a vis The Outreach Program. A wonderful two days of learning and fun! So much to share…..
I had the time of my life. If I had only known, I would have volunteered much sooner.
You will treasure your memories forever..as I shall.
Don’t wait. Follow your dreams and open your heart. The world is waiting!

It was an incredible experience

It was an incredible experience. Everything happend in a very good way and the contact with the local team was perfect. For a first experience, this way was so good to discover a new culture and everything about a country. In the school where I teach I was free to do and experiment everything I wanted. The experience was so better than I expect. I create a link with a lot of people that I will never forget for all my life. The contact with the organisation to plan this trip was also perfect with no problem, they answer all my questions.

Pros
  • teaching a class of children
  • create super-link with the childrens of the school
  • traveling around kenya
Cons
  • I would like to stay more
  • the price
  • i don't know at all it was so good

A chance to see a different world

Something my experience really helped me realize is the huge heterogeneity in ideas, opinions and perspectives people might identify themselves in depending on the social and historical context in which they grew up. I understood that in life it's very important to be able to resize one's own problems and to try to look at the bigger picture, contributing to the betterment of someone's situation.
This journey taught me to try to understand without judging, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to get to know myself in a completely new environment.

Pros
  • Helps you look at things from a different perspective
  • Gives you the opportunity to meet new and interesting people with whom you can share your experience
  • You immerge yourself in a different culture
Cons
  • It can be hard to accept that not everyone lives in the same world as you

The most beautiful experience of my life!

Volunteering is a life-changing experience, you will learn and experience a new culture, community, people, language and most important: you will create beautiful memories with amazing people while you make an impact. If you are a volunteering for the first time IVHQ is the best organization to do it with. They offer 24/7 guidance, a diverse variety of programs/countries and an amazing team that will guide you through the whole process. I joined the kindergarten and special needs program in Kenya for 3 weeks, I spent every day teaching and playing with the most lovable and kind kids. The teachers and volunteers at the school I was placed in became my family and the school my home away from home. If you are thinking about it do it, you will have the BEST time of your life!

Pros
  • Made friends that became family
  • Experienced a new beautiful culture that taught me new things
  • Find happiness
Cons
  • None

Best Abroad Trip!

I had the most amazing time on my 2 week trip to Kenya. It was much more than I could've anticipated. I have been following IVHQ for over 10 years now. I knew when I was younger that volunteering abroad was something I wanted to do but when you are young, having the time and money plays a major part. So when I finally got the time during the pandemic, I booked before I could talk myself out it (nerves of the unknown)! And I'm so glad I did. Between the culture, the people and the children I met (I taught children from PP1-grade 8) this experience left me nothing short of humbly appreciative. Down to my host family and the food that was prepared for us (I had two roommates also volunteering and we became fast friends!) daily was such a joy. I was awaiting such a big culture shock (and please don't review my experience, and think that you won't have one. Everyone is different!) but it never happened. It was all very comfortable and enjoyable. Again, everyone's experience will be different, even my next program may be very different but if you go in with no expectations except to give back to a community that needs helping hands, then you will love IVHQ. I came back on such a high, that I already signed up for my next destination!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The weekend trip to Maasai Mara for the Safari. It is a must do for anyone traveling to Nairobi. The most beautiful thing to experience these animals in their natural habitat. Absolutely amazing

Teaching in Nairobi

I went to the Teaching programme in Nairobi and it was the best experience in my life! Some people said that they were amazed that I am doing this with just 18, but I think it helped me a lot to grow and see beyond my little home town in Germany. All the kind people I met there, the volunteers, my host family and all the kids at the school… I have already decided to visit them before I go to University and I will definitely take part in even more IVHQ programmes!!! The only regret I have is that I only signed up for a month, so to everyone wanting to do this programme I recommend to do it over a longer period of time!!!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have chosen to do the full 3 months, instead of only 1 month!

Best Volunteer Experience

This was my first trip out of the country and my first major volunteering experience, but it was also the best part of my life. The friends I made along the way and the people I met will impact me forever. IVHQ has shown me how much I can do by helping those in poorer countries around the world. The organization also lets you go on side trips on the weekend, such as safari. These trips are fun and also let you experience the culture much more than regular touristy trips. Everyone who was with me in the program wanted to stay longer and the goodbyes were the saddest part.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would do more. This was my first volunteer experience and I was a bit timid, but by the end of the trip when I was looking back I was wishing I had done more.

Questions & Answers

As long as you are 18 or over you can volunteer!

What would I expect to need if I were planning to volunteer for around 3 months or, a rate per month if possible? And what would be included? Sorry for the brevity, thank you
