ITA

I decided to get my TEFL certification after teaching ESL in Vietnam. I went through ITA because I've heard how great of a program it is, and it really is an awesome program. You can tell that the teachers love what they are doing and they really want their students to be the best ESL teachers that they can be. The course work can be difficult at times, but that's good because it will only make you a better teacher. I also really like how ITA provides their graduates with a life time of job search guidance. The student affairs team is really helpful and will even look over your cover letter and resume for you. If anything, that was probably what really made my decision. If you want to get your TEFL certification do it through ITA it's the best.

What would you improve about this program?
The one thing I would improve is maybe there being more speedy responses from the student affairs team when sending your resume and cover letter for them to look over.

An Experience That's Opened Many Doors

I took it upon myself to walk into the ITA office several years ago merely inquiring about my options for my [then] pipe-dream of living and working abroad. From start to finish, the staff was extremely helpful and gave me the tools I needed to feel more confident regarding my experience of teaching abroad and has since opened up quite a few doors over the years.

Compared to many people I know, my TEFL certification experience was unique in the sense that I was in a classroom for a month-long practicum. Although ITA offers an online course which I have also heard great things about, I preferred to be in a classroom and interacting with other people in the same boat as me.

ITA was the boost that gave me the courage to move halfway across the world in 2013, and nearly five years later I'm still finding the course beneficial. One of the reasons this program is unparalleled to others in the market is the fact the alumni groups exist. I've been teaching English in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for a little over a year now and have connected with so many awesome ITA alumni here through the Facebook groups. It's honestly been an invaluable asset to the certification itself. In addition, the South Korea Alumni group connected me with one of my closest girlfriends I've met abroad; same with the Vietnam group.

While I didn't initially move abroad to teach English in Vietnam, I'm glad the path brought me here, as not only is it one of my favorite countries on our planet, but my entire experience in Saigon has been completely transformative. I largely have ITA to thank for that, as I may not have had this opportunity otherwise.

All in all, I had a wonderful experience and cannot recommend the program enough.

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I can really recommend changing would be to possibly adapt some of the course material to include sections on dealing with super young learners, rather than just adults. Many people who go to Asia are generally not teaching adults right off the bat. This may have changed since 2013, though!

Life Learning in Hanoi

Getting certified to teach in Hanoi was awesome. When you start up in a new country it's really nice to have a little community already started, this is the perfect way to build one! I made some great friends from all around the world in just a few weeks. We all learned together and explored the city and made memories I'll never forget! Hanoi has a great night scene in old quarter filled with 20 something backpackers for excitement every night and the north lake area hosts lots of other expats so you'll always be able to find a slice of home. Of course the city is so culturally rich as well, you'll find little street markets for grocery shopping, meet friendly locals driving Grab bikes, and experience what real Vietnam life is like.
I'm so glad I lived in Hanoi, I had an incredible experience there, and hold it with me now that I'm back in the States too.

What would you improve about this program?
Give more heads up when tet new year is happening so students can avoid struggling with finding a job during this time.

A Pho-Nomenal Experience!

I always knew I wanted to try my hand at teaching abroad, I just needed a little push! From start to finish, the team at the International TEFL Academy were incredibly supportive, encouraging and patient. By the time I landed in Vietnam to begin my TEFL course, I truly felt prepared and excited for this new chapter. Though I previously had no teaching experience, the TEFL course itself really equipped me with all the knowledge and tools a new ESL teacher could possibly need. Through the job assistance and alumni network, ITA really helped me smoothly immerse and connect to my new city of Hanoi, which has a tendency to be a chaotic and overwhelming place. If you're thinking of getting certified to teach abroad through the International TEFL Academy, consider this your push. And if this post isn't convincing enough, maybe the sound of 10 cent beers, trendy cafes, buzzing nightlife and cheap but delicious cuisine will further entice you!

What would you improve about this program?
It really was such a great experience! I cannot really think of anything I would change.

My TESOL Experience

A year ago, I would have never imagined myself living in Hanoi, Vietnam. In fact, much like most Caribbean people, I believed my travel expeditions were limited to a particular region. I am proud to say that registering with the International TEFL Academy (ITA) to study in Vietnam was the best decision that I have ever made.

From the very beginning, prior to my registration, ITA provided the necessary information that helped me to make a life-changing decision. My advisor was extremely attentive and answered all my questions. After registration, I was connected to the go-to person in Vietnam who assisted me greatly before my big move. The representative informed me about what to bring to Vietnam and what to expect.

The 4-week intensive TESOL course in Hanoi was brilliant. Our trainer was a well-seasoned English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher who was inspiring, patient and professional. The course modules were extremely appropriate; I arrived in Vietnam with no teaching experience and after the course I felt more prepared than ever to excel in a classroom setting.

Vietnam is also an amazing and developed country. The people of Vietnam are exceptionally friendly and the culture is fascinating. There is so much to see and do that you will never have a dull moment. As an ESL teacher, you are looking at a reasonably high salary with a very low cost of living. The potential to save while living in Vietnam is very high. Also, native teachers are always in demand.

I am extremely happy with my decision to move to Vietnam and would recommend this destination to anyone.

What would you improve about this program?
More teaching practice with different schools/institutions.

Cambodia

ITA is not actually a school, they reach out to other company's and act as a connecter between you and an on site school. What this means, is that if something happens at the onsite school, ITA will not help you out. Your instructor was falling asleep during lessons and getting his information wrong? tough luck. Has your instructor offered to take you on an over night trip but turns out he has been experiencing health problems and is unsafe to take you scuba diving? ITA doesn't give a crap. Is your school charging you way too much money for housing in a place that is beside a sewer river and has bugs everywhere?

Also ITA promises in country job assistance. Turns out my in country help only had one resource and hadn't been paid in MONTHS.

What a waste of money this rip off "Academy" was, you are better off saving your money and getting a $50 online certificate.

What would you improve about this program?
Maybe when someone tries contacting ITA with a complaint, dont try to placate them with free online classes, just give them their partial refund for screwing them over.

Response from International TEFL Academy

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for your detailed feedback regarding our former partner Language Corp, who offered TEFL classes in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand. We are sincerely upset when we hear any of our students had a poor experience with one of our ITA classes or one of our partner classes. Your TEFL course was in June of 2016. We discontinued our relationship with Language Corp in August of 2016 due to issues identified that summer.
We worked with Language Corp for 6 years, and prior to the summer of 2016, we consistently received positive feedback from alumni about this class. Again, we discontinued working with Language Corp in August of 2016, and we have since partnered with a new TEFL school in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

We reach out to students prior to the start of each course to make sure they know how to contact us with any questions or issues. We also send a survey at the end of the course so student can share any issues, complaints, or suggestions. You only corresponded with ITA was regarding a SCUBA class you contracted with Language Corp, which is not affiliated with ITA.

In September 2017, you left ITA a phone message to request a refund, a year later. We were told this was because you felt your TEFL training was not sufficient. We then offered you our Online TEFL class for free so you could have an additional TEFL training opportunity.

We then received another email detailing your poor experience during your class, which then led to a phone call. During this call we were able to hear the full extent of your negative experiences for the first time. We apologize for not having a phone call with you sooner, and we should have spoken with you before declining your request for a refund.

We are now fully informed of the poor experience you had. We felt the partner TEFL class did not fulfill the expectations that we promise all of our students. As a result, we refunded you the full amount of your deposit.

To clarify a few points from your review:

We partner with other TEFL schools as a way to provide students the opportunity to take an in-person class in the location of their choosing, while still having access to ITA's job search guidance staff, resources, and alumni networks. In 2017 we will train over 5,000 students. Over 90% are students we directly train at ITA, so we are indeed a TEFL school and not just an agent.

Regarding your experience with job search guidance, you stated you had assistance from “one resource.” It’s standard for a TEFL school to have one person in charge of job search guidance along with 1-2 instructors. We also have eight full-time Student Affairs Advisors in the U.S. who specialize in job search guidance. These advisors are a resource for all ITA graduates. We are only an email or Skype call away for all of our graduates as part of our lifetime job assistance.

We are truly sorry for the poor experience you had with this class. We wish you would have told us sooner, as it’s a lot more difficult to amend the situation a year later. It seems after our phone call offering you an additional training opportunity, issuing you a refund on your deposit, and explaining how you can utilize our job assistance & alumni services for future teaching experience, that you were completely satisfied with our response and have changed your perception of ITA as an organization.

Sincerely,
Bruce Jones,
President of International TEFL Academy
