Turks and Caicos Islands

This was such an amazing experience and allowed me to grow so much in just one week! I learned so much about how to approach medical needs based on different cultures. I was also able to experience the island. There was a good balance of work and exploring which was so nice! Some things were organized for us to do outside of clinic and plenty of time to venture on our own as well! Transportation was provided so we did not have to worry about organized that! We also had housing taken care of so we just had to show up!

Pros
  • Clinical experience is organized for you
  • Food and housing where also organized for you
Cons
  • Lack of communication on day of

Audiology in Turks and Caicos!

What an amazing opportunity it was to be able to provide audiological services to the local students and spend time on the beautiful island! The students were so welcoming and kind to us from the moment we walk onto the school campuses. They had never had their hearing screened before so they were excited to play our “listening games.” It was really cool that we could work and do clinic during the school hours and then go to the beach for some fun in the sun! My favorite part on our fun day was getting to snorkel for the first time!

Best trip ever

Our week in Turks & Caicos was magical! From snorkeling in the middle of the Atlantic to going into the schools and getting to spend time with the kids and teachers of those communities. This experience will affect how I move forward as a clinician. I learned so much from collaborating with my classmates, the audiologist students, the local SLP, the students and the teachers. Not to mention all the wonderful food, swimming, and fun we had. Thank you, study abroad, for providing such a unique and valuable experience.

Pros
  • Collaboration
  • Cultural Humility
  • Food

The Best Experience!!!!

I loved every second of the trip to Turks & Caicos as an SLP. You got to try great food and see the beach but also make an impact in the schools through evaluations and observations. It was so awesome getting to work with the kiddos and help support the teachers! I highly highly recommend this trip and if you are thinking about it … do it! I loved getting to see what their schools looked like and experience their culture too. The trip was very flexible and everyone supported each other. I would do this trip over again in a heartbeat

Turks and Caicos Study Abroad

Absolutely LOVED this trip! It was a great way to grow in my clinical skills and expand my cultural knowledge. All of the people were friendly and did a great job of explaining the tasks of the trip. I never felt unsafe or unsure of where I was going or what my expectations were. We were able to go into schools and support the special education staff by evaluation students K- 5th grade. My favorite part was getting to ask questions and experience a culture that is very different than my own. I would recommend to anyone!

Unforgettable experience!

This trip was absolutely amazing! I gained clinical experiences that I would have never gotten in my graduate program without this trip. Working with children in the local schools was unforgettable and was equally challenging, rewarding, and fun. I gained evaluation experience and learned to stay on our toes and adapt with the fluid nature of the schedule and school system. The schedule of the trip left plenty of time for work and fun as we ended most days on the STUNNING beaches. If you're questioning whether you should sign up for this trip, DO IT! I was skeptical when signing up and have absolutely no regrets. I 10/10 recommend and would go back in a heartbeat!

Pros
  • Unique clinical experience
  • Plenty of time to enjoy the beach, pool, restaurants, etc.
  • Many meals are included
Cons
  • Communication with the schools was difficult at times, causing scheduling hiccups
  • Meals that are not covered can easily get pricey

Turks & Caicos Study Abroad

This was an incredible experience where I was able to practice clinical skills, improve upon developing skills, and work with wonderful patients and supervisors. I have not had the opportunity to work with populations with limited access to care, and this trip really helped me understand how I can be most impactful. I loved being able to learn and grow in my cultural humility in this way. Not only that, but I had such a fun time enjoying the beach, the food, and incredible fellow clinicians. I highly recommend therapy abroad to anyone and I would take the chance to do something like this again.

Cons
  • Limited advanced scheduling of activities

An amazing experience in Turks and Caicos!

This experience was once in a lifetime! We went to Turks and Caicos and provided services to some of the local schools on the island. It was a beautiful place to visit, and all the people I interacted with were wonderful and so thankful for us. Some of the best memories I had were just talking with the students every day about their life. They were always so excited to see us, they ran up to us and hugged us every day. I learned a lot, developed my clinical skills, and even snuck in some time to relax on the beach! I would recommend this experience to anyone!

Pros
  • Beautiful island
  • The people were wonderful
Cons
  • Communication wasn’t always the best
