About Program

Atlantis is the largest and most reputable pre-health study abroad organization for US undergraduates. What better way to gain 60+ clinical hours than in the beautiful and warm country of Spain. Not only will students be shadowing in top European hospitals with well-esteemed physicians, but students also have the opportunity to explore the rich culture that their host city has to offer.

Students will learn from and build relationships with the physicians in each specialty they rotate in and participate in excursions to enhance intercultural perspectives. This is the best way to show MD/DO/PA school admissions that you can compare and contrast different healthcare systems and apply that knowledge towards improving the care of your future patients. With alumni in 40 of the top 50 MD programs, Atlantis prepares students for a future career in healthcare.

Since summer of 2021, Atlantis has ran many safe and successful programs throughout the continuance of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I really liked the program- it was fun and educational. It definitely helped me reach my pre-health career goals. I feel like the doctors I shadowed were able to communicate with me well in English. I was also able to practice my Spanish skills while living in Spain. I enjoyed the beauty of Majorca and loved meeting students with similar goals. I also loved my city manager who made me feel at home and taught me many things about Spain. I would recommend this program to any student that would like to be abroad while reaching their goals.

3 Weeks in Valladolid, España

This is a must do for every premed and future healthcare worker! Shadowing outside the US provides students with a unique experience to learn about a healthcare system different from the US and how it affects its patients. There are different cases and diseases you may experience and learn about that you otherwise would not have. The doctors are so helpful and want to teach the students and make it as memorable an experience as possible. When I was not shadowing, I was immersed in the culture with my amazing Atlantis group. The excursions were a lot of fun and a great way to see other parts of Spain that I never would have visited! My city manager was excellent as well, and made sure all of us were getting the most out of our shadowing and time in Valladolid. I cannot say enough positive things about this experience and encourage everyone to go and try it for themselves. 100% would do it again!

Pros
  • Shadowing doctors and lots of specialties
  • Being immersed in the Spanish culture
  • My amazing group of friends and city manager

Best Summer Ever

I thoroughly enjoyed my month spent in Spain. I had a wonderful shadowing experience in many different areas, created great connections with doctors, made new friends, and immersed myself in a new culture. I would recommend taking some Spanish before going just to have an idea of what’s going on. I never felt overwhelmed with shadowing it was just five hours a day Monday-Thursday. Each Friday we did a fun group excursion, and my study abroad group grew close so each weekend we would travel to other cities/countries together. I cannot recommend this program enough!

Pros
  • Environment
  • Experience
  • Exploration
Cons
  • Mostly in Spanish
  • Some difficulty in accessing bigger cities

Spain medical shadowing

This experience was very educational and also fun! Atlantis does a great job with creating a good balance between shadowing hours and organized group events and excursions. We had organized group dinners and an excursion each week! I got to learn so much in each of my rotations in the hospital and also outside of the hospital learning about the city I was in and the other cities we visit as a group! I highly recommend this program if you are a pre-health student looking for more experience and want to go abroad!

Shadowing Overseas

I would say there are two important components for this program. The experience you get shadowing in the hospital and the experience you getting to know Spanish culture. Being inside the hospital you feel like part of the staff once you start interacting with doctors, residents and nurses. From my experience, they were really welcoming and warm. Exploring Spain was something challenging but it helped to be more open-minded. Trying different food and speaking to locals really made my experience very full-filling.

Pros
  • Getting to know different places within the same country
  • The experience inside the hospital is really immersive
Cons
  • The internet in our housing was a little slow so it was difficult to stay connected
  • The pre-departure form was really difficult to navigate

Shadowing Abroad in Pontevedra, Spain

Shadowing abroad with Atlantis is a great and unique opportunity for anyone interested in a career in the medical field. Not only was I able to learn more about the field I want to go into, I also got to expand my knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. The hospital staff were all extremely welcoming, helpful, and insightful and I felt very comfortable in that setting. Additionally, the Atlantis staff were always attentive and responsive. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone!!

Pros
  • Shadowing multiple specialities in one program
  • Weekly excursions to learn more about Spain
  • Being able to learn more Spanish
Cons
  • Not getting to shadow a lot of the specialties I had specified I was interested in
  • Feeling like I didn’t spend enough time in each specialty to really learn everything I wanted to

Amazing Opportunity!

I attended this program the summer after my freshman year in college. Although inexperienced, I had an incredible time gaining healthcare exposure while also making lasting connections. The doctors were all incredibly kind and willing to incorporate me into their busy days. Being able to follow them throughout their entire day helped me get a more complete understanding of a doctor's routine, something that is not too available in the United States.
I think my favorite part of the program though was getting to be immersed in an entirely different healthcare system and Spain's culture. My group also traveled across Spain on the weekends so it was a great mix of learning and fun. I would heavily recommend this to anyone looking for a unique pre-med experience!

Pros
  • Immersion in Spanish culture
  • Building relationships with doctors and peers
  • Unique Experience
Cons
  • Might be a lot of walking depending on the person
  • In total, expenses were a little high
