About Program

Atlas offers the lowest volunteering fees in Ghana and various volunteering placement types providing a high and meaningful social impact. Our projects are located around the Abetifi district which is based on top of the Kwahu mountain plateau and Akwidaa coastline. The shared volunteer houses and surrounding rainforests offer breathtaking views. We focus our placements across Education, Sports Development, Renovation, Eco Protection and Sea Turtle Conservation.

Our placements run throughout the year and there's always a team of volunteers out with us, so you can plan when fits best with your schedule to join us. As previous volunteers in the local area we set this organisation up to remove the business element out of volunteering and work with the local community to assist in their development, one step at a time.

Ghana is often referred to as Africa for beginners and offers a safe, serene environment for your trip whilst experiencing new cultures and warm welcoming people.

Simply incredible projects, people and location

I was volunteering in Ghana with Atlas Volunteers for two months. This was my first time volunteering abroad and I really can only say positive things about my experience. First off, the support throughout was great. Whenever I had any inquiries, even before starting my journey, the team was always there to help promptly. You will be briefed on everything you need to know to find your way around. So if you are worried about traveling alone to an unknown country - don't be. You will be in very good hands and will be staying in a safe and welcoming setting. Furthermore, the type of placements is really well thought through and adequate. It's evident, that the focus of Atlas is to provide effectual and sustainable ways for people to come and help out. Additionally, there is a great effort to build a feeling of community with various optional weekly activities bringing everyone involved together. In general, activities during off-time don't come short. Despite the location being very rural, there are lots of things to see and do on weekends, free afternoons, or a night out. The Atlas team was of great assistance here too, always happy to give some recommendations. To sum up, I will say this - if you are looking for a way to donate your time in an impactful, affordable, and fulfilling way, you have definitely come to the right place and will not be disappointed!

Pros
  • Truly meaningful and impactful projects
  • Great support and wonderful people
  • Lovely location

Atlas Volunteers - Review

From the first moment I arrived in the volunteer house I really felt welcomed. Not only the other volunteers but also the people who organized the projects were so lovely and helped me with settling into this new environment. There is always something going on at the volunteer house, you will play games together, sit and chat together or just read books next to each other. I really enjoyed the time we had at the house.
I signed up for the project teaching, which was a perfect fit for me. One thing which is really cool at Atlas Volunteers is that everything really is flexible and can bring in new ideas or new ways of doing things into teaching. I would do Reading Club with the kids, which meant spending one-on-one time with the kids. The levels of the kids were all quite different, so with some kids I would read and others I would teach the alphabet. Teaching the children was really fulfilling. Most of the kids were so enthusiastic about learning new things and everyday was truly amazing.
On the weekends we mostly explored Ghana and saw so many new things and there are so many sights to see in the area. Even during the week the Atlas family did a lot of exploring and hanging out together, which was really nice to get to know all of the people and get along with them.
That is also my next point. You will really meet so many amazing and kind people traveling to Ghana and staying with Atlas Volunteers. In total I stayed five weeks in Ghana and during these weeks I met wonderful people, not only the other volunteers but also locals from the nearby towns.

Pros
  • Members of Atlas Volunteers (great organization, communication and caring/ a lot of nice time spent together such as family nights, Twi lessons and little trips together)
  • Activities in Ghana (a lot of beautiful travel options on the weekends as well as during the week you can see a lot of sights nearby the area)
  • Program Education (loving kids at the schools who were eager to learn and grateful teachers who appreciated the work we did)

Just perfect!

It was a truly amazing experience for my son and I. We really felt welcome and part of a human adventure. My 5 year-old was really taken care of. The staff and the other volunteers help you get organised and learn how to get around etc. Seriously, I would go back without a second thought....!
Being able to take care in different programs such as reforestation, plastic awareness as well as teaching enabled us to have a wider view of the real life in Ghana. It was so enjoyable!
We are counting days to come back!

Best volunteering experience out there

I wholeheartedly recommend volunteering with Atlas. Their projects are so meaningful and rewarding to be a part of. The coordinators are so approachable and supporting with any queries of concerns so it makes the whole experience smoother and more enjoyable. The projects and the house are placed in a beautiful area of Ghana, whilst being completely safe as a foreigner. It is great socially with many places to explore, and many bars to enjoy. My trip in Ghana was one of the best periods of my life and that is all thanks to Atlas.

Pros
  • Meaningful
  • Supportive
  • Rewarding

Amazing

I had an awesome trip to Ghana and I am very grateful for this experience. I felt very welcome and in good hands because the program‘s stuff help you with any question and are always there for you.
Seeing the excitement of the children at school about the little things and helping them is the only thing that matters and I hope I could make an improvement.
I am sure that everyone at Atlas Volunteers will have a good time.
Also, you get a chance to explore Ghana a bit more and learn about a new culture.

Pros
  • Always welcomed
  • I have been taken care of
  • The love of the kids

Atlas Volunteers- Education

I have just completed my third trip with Atlas Volunteers, this time I lived there for 8 months. There are lots of reasons I keep going back and will continue to. The support system and the Atlas Family is supportive and passionate about yhe projects and making sure that every volunteer thar is safe, happy and enjoying their stay as well as being fulfilled by whatever project they are in. Atlas is very flexible as well in the sense that if a volunteer wanted to change projects or extend, staff is available 24/7 to help you out. Ghana is one of the safest places I have evwr traveled, I tell everyone that I feel more safe going out in Ghana alone then I do at home (California, USA). I loved my Ghana life, traveling around the country on the weekends, going to the local markets, and going to school during the week. And i had the unique opportunity to watch change happen. Usually people omly have trips for a couple of monthsm But because I was there for longer I got to see plants grow, schools built and children grow. You usually can't see the impact you've made in such a short time, but I've seen Atlas Volunteers work. And I can't wait to go hack in the coming years to see how they've grown.

Pros
  • Safety
  • Supporting staff
  • Flexible
Cons
  • If you are not an independent individual, you probably won't do as well
  • Housing can be messy (depending on people living there)
  • You have to be patient because everything happens in 'Ghana time'

Got a new family

I’ve spent with Atlas 6 months of my life. It’s been one of the best experiences I ever did and I would do it again a hundred times. I’ve had the opportunity to meet people around the world and l will consider most of them part of my worldwide family for the rest of my life.
Ghanaian people has made me feel part of them since day one. I’ve been travelling around Ghana during these 6 months and -even when I was alone- I never felt in danger.
About the Atlas team I really don’t know where to start.
When I arrived in may I didn’t know I would have felt at home so quickly. Sam, Frank, Gem and Dominic made me feel really at home, sometimes too much maybe (I know I’ve been stressing you guys, but I really do love you and everything I did, I did it for you).
Since I came back to Italy there’s not a day that I will pass without thinking at least once about that period and about them.
I miss all the kids, I miss all the panic with taxis in the morning, I miss having breakfast all together and waiting for the new volunteer to come. I miss playing football and basketball with the kids and the youth of Abetifi. I miss the bar and all the people dancing like there’s no tomorrow. I even miss waiting for hours for a trotro. And -most of all- I miss Richmond’s omotuo.
I can’t wait to come back to you all, you are always in my mind and heart. Medaase papapapa ❤️💛💚
