Changed my life forever!

I searched many programs and this program seemed to be the most legit. I was totally happy with the program's experience. The material was easy to understand without it being too simplified. I was able to learn things at a decent paste and I felt I was getting my money's worth. It felt like a college course and I was able to receive grades and feedback from the instructors of ITA. It's great for those who know nothing about teaching and for those who may need a refresher. Although, the actual real experience will teach things as well, this program helped me add more to the classrooms that I have taught.

ITA's online course

I'm delighted I took the online course and highly recommend it to anyone that is interested. It qualified me to teach abroad, which effectively changed my life. The people I met and my experiences abroad reshaped the world in my view. Even though I'm considered 'mature', my recommendation is for all ages. The world is a fascinating place with many things to experience. ITA's online, or in-person course will open up the possibility of working as you travel the globe. Whether you decide to live in one country abroad or more, you will be forever changed.

Pros
  • Meeting people from all over the world
  • 'Tasting' the culture and cuisine personally
  • Traveling
Cons
  • Ageism in hiring
  • My foreign language skills were lacking
  • n/a

Response from International TEFL Academy

Hi Jean,

Thanks for taking the time to share your positive experience taking ITA's Online TEFL Course. We love to hear from more "mature" students like yourself because folks who are a bit more advanced in life often think that teaching English abroad is not for them, even though that is not the case! We're glad to hear that taking the course positively impacted your life and helped you enjoy a life-changing experience teaching English abroad. Even though you completed your TEFL course in 2019, please remember that you can always get in touch for job search guidance if and when you decide to pursue new opportunities. Our team is here to help!

Amazing Experience

I randomly discovered International TEFL back in 2015. I was in my second year at UIC and was walking around the Lakeview neighborhood and stumbled upon it. I walked in and got a brochure. I want to say that the people working there were helpful and nice. Many had experiences teaching abroad. It really inspired me. The idea to teach abroad stuck with me for the next few years while getting my degree. When I graduated in 2018, I knew I wanted to finally move abroad. But I didn't know where or how. That's when I reached out to Intl TEFL again and was set up with an advisor. She was helpful and informative. She helped me pick a country that suits me best. In January 2019, I signed up to take the class. By that November, I was living and teaching in South Korea! I was very nervous but felt prepared thanks to the class. I also had a salary advantage with a TEFL certificate. I am still in South Korea and have had the best experiences of my life here. As a history major, I am happy I get to visit many historical sites in my free time. I love to travel around the country. I hope soon, because covid restrictions are mostly over, that I can travel around Asia. I am very grateful for my experience with this company.

Pros
  • Lesson planning
  • Guidance
  • Advisors
Cons
  • Cost is a little high
  • For one assignment, I submitted a paper but it didn't actually get submitted. I didn't notice until it was too late and I wasn't allowed to submit it. So be careful about that!

Well Prepared

I was very happy with the instruction I received. Moreover, It had been a long time since I attended school and a lot had changed. My instructor was a wealth of assistance and information and she was so patient and understanding. I was employed immediately after finishing my course and have worked steadily for almost a year and a half now. I use all of the skills I learned on a daily basis. The course was not easy but I enjoyed it and I am pleased with the experience. I can recommend this program with confidence.

Pros
  • Comprehensive course
  • Flexibility of study time
  • Feedback from instructor
Cons
  • A bit expensive
  • A bit difficult
  • Not a lot of opportunity for older folks like me

tefl

As an ITA graduate with a 120 hours TEFL certificate, I profoundly and wholeheartedly recommend this course of study to anyone who’s looking for flexible and rewarding employment. My decision for completing the TEFL certificate was based on the two forementioned reasons. I was able to teach as soon as I graduated. I thought from home and also freely traveled as well, while maintaining my teaching schedule, with my students. It’s been a gratifying experience and one that I fully recommend for anyone who wants stability, flexibility and financial rewards.

Pros
  • Flexible study time
  • Excellent student support
  • Great student teacher communication

Good until the last step

Great program, great material. Finished and paid for everything. One problem: I never received any support for the Final Practicorum requirement so investment down the drain. Other than this everything was great. But what’s the point if you don’t get a certificate. Wouldn’t recommend this program despite the raving reviews I read. They’ll give you a list of contacts and tell you to go figure it out. For $2,000+ that’s unacceptable when I was told there’s a department that handles that. “Handles” as in gives you a list and tells you to figure it out by a deadline.

Pros
  • Great learning program
  • Big name
  • Important lessons and feeling of accomplishment
Cons
  • Everything online accept required practicorum
  • Dept for practicorum support that is basically a word doc with contacts
  • Empty promises

Learning Processes ITA

The learning process from start to finish, including the followups are what really set ITA apart from any other learning institution I’ve studied at. The meaningful professional feedback, created a sense of being a part of career program, that became realistic as the process progressed. The reason I say this, is because in the beginning the thought of traveling and teaching in Europe was very abstract for me. This is also the reason I am a huge fan of the stories graduates share about teaching abroad.

Since I have been in Nitra, the region of some of my own ancestors, in the Slovak Republic, my experience has moved beyond the classroom. I have learned about the culture and the people through my students and through the community. In particular, I have seen the responses to the war in the Ukraine, as the community is affected by the crisis.

Sadly, the effects of a long Russian presence here has influenced the residents, even many years after the Russian era ended in Europe. Several of my students even confided in me about mysterious disappearances and residual fear due to the Russian presence in the modern day and historically, both in the region I was teaching in, and in regions adjacent. The sad part was that it was the students who told me about this, whereas the adults tend to shy away from the subject, and this makes them appear unsympathetic.

The part that didn’t make sense, was that this country is an EU member country. So why would people here be so scared of Russia still?
It seems to be a situation that will most likely improve over time and as the war resolves, but again being from Canada things are definitely a bit of a surprise. I mention it here because the American and Canadian press are covering the Ukraine crisis often, and I just picked up on things here and there, worth saying.

Another thing that I noticed is that many of the smaller nations like the Slovak Republic where I am, don’t really call out Russia in the press. I think there is a concern that Russia will just spill back into Europe, and no one wants to be on record saying that the war is horrific. It really has become a normalized thing throughout this region and many others.

This is outside of my scope as an English teacher and the content of the essay, but I thought I should mention it, just in case. So yeah, you guys are great and some people living in countries near Russia are pretty damn scared of it. So what else is new, I suppose.

Seriously though, you guys are awesome and overall, it has been totally worth it to achieve my certificate and teach abroad. Thank-you so much. Probably the best money I ever spent!

A great first step for adventure!

ITA was challenging but attainable. You’ll definitely learn what you need to be a successful teacher, and any foreign school will be impressed with your certification. So many doors have been opened for me, including teaching at a private school in Russia, back in 2018, and teaching online from the States. If you’re finished with school and want to see the world, even if you don’t want to make teaching your career, ITA is the perfect first step to getting out and discovering the world and discovering yourself. I’ve gained so much self confidence and esteem by stepping out of my comfort, and ITA was the first step the set me on my journey.

Pros
  • I learned so much about grammar that I didn’t know.
  • I learned to recognize that language is directly correlated with culture.

Yes, many people take TEFL courses who are not native English speakers, they need to be proficient in English to be accepted into TEFL classes and have excellent English to be able to work in schools. Here's an article:https://www.internationalteflacademy.com/non-native-english…

The answer is it depends entirely on which country you choose to teach in. I made a lot of money in China but it is not an easy place to live.
