About Program

The Language House & Babel Language School organize a TEFL/TESOL course in Antalya, TURKEY for the English teacher training to facilitate teaching English abroad.

It is a LIVE course, you have 2 weeks theory and 2 weeks teacher practices with the students at our school. The students are from the UK, USA, Europe and Middle East. Course professor is from the UK, the students in the teacher practises are Turkish who are learning English at school.

With the increasing demand and a variety of English teaching jobs, we focus on Turkey. Our TEFL/TESOL certificate is accredited, internationally recognized and follows The British Council criteria with over 120 hours of class time. After our training, you will be well on your way to exploring this part of the world by teaching English.

Sama is 25 year-old from Montreal, Canada and visited Babel in August, 2012. She did her Bachelors in Accounting in Concordia University, Montreal, and worked as an accountant in an educational travel company for close to 5 years. Today, she is completing her masters in Boston University in Computer Information Systems. She loves trying new things, hence her love for traveling. She loves good company (and of course good food always helps).

Why did you decide to teach abroad with Babel Language School?

They were the only association that accommodated a short stay (less than a month) and had good reviews. They answered all our questions promptly and sent over full documentation as well as photos of the homestay family.

Describe your typical day.

We would get up and have breakfast with our homestay family. Depending on our schedule, we would normally head over to the school together; either via subway or by walking if we have some extra time. We would get there early to prepare class material for the day and wait for the students to greet them before our morning classes begin. In the afternoon, we would have lunch at school and take a break. The kids would then return for the afternoon classes!

Our evenings were our free time to discover Antalya. We would go out an discover the (beautiful) city. The school was located in the center of the city so you had access to pretty much everything you want: the beach, the market, the mosques, the restaurants, etc. We even enjoyed diner at some point with a student from abroad that came to learn Turkish at Babel while doing her residency in Antalya.

What made this experience unique and special?

They provided a 4-hour Turkish course which helped interact with the children, and even helped with the rest of our stay in Turkey (and hopefully when we return!) They were very welcoming and it was almost a culture, history and geography lesson all at once. What more can you ask for?

How has this experience impacted your future?

This was actually my first real teaching experience – and if anything, this taught me the importance of listening in communication. I didn’t speak Turkish, and many of the children didn’t speak English. But we made it work, and managed to understand each other!

What was a highlight of your trip?

We asked to visit an orphanage or elderly home so we can do a bit of volunteering during our stay. They made it happen despite it being difficult as there is some security screening necessary. We visited the orphanage and to be able to play with the children, teach them some songs, listen to their own performances; that was a beautiful experience. It was difficult to experience, yet to see how well they are treated, and how amazing their teachers and environment are, was refreshing!

What position do you hold at Babelgrup? What has been your career path so far?

Hello, my name is Mehtap Gayda and I am the founder and director of Babelgrup. I have BA in English Language and Literature and MA in Teaching. After school I have stayed in the US for a year and visited places and learned a lot. I have been working as a teacher, translator & interpreter and education consultant since 2005. I started Babelgrup in 2008. We offer language courses, translation and consulting services in Antalya, Turkey. Since then we focus on providing quality services for our students and clients. Our building is located in the heart of Antalya with a fabulous mountain and sea view.

Did YOU study abroad? If so, where did you go and what inspired you to go?!

Yes. After university I went to Oregon USA for a conference at Oregon University. I wanted to study at the University of Massachusetts then I decided to turn back to Turkey. After I got married, I went to France to learn French.

Studying abroad is ‘awesome’, you learn to be an individual and respect life, people, cultures and have colourful perspectives. It makes you to live & think outside the box. Travelling is and will always be my passion. You surrender yourself to a country and its people and enjoy the experience. The world is full of adventures for you to see and experience!

What does the future hold for Babel - any new programs to share?

We would like to have more programs and new students from all over the world to experience and share knowledge & travelling with us. We will add some more language courses for our students. We are planning to be in different places as Babel school wants to be in many locations such as İstanbul, İzmir, Ankara, Bursa and Adana that are the big cities in Turkey. We will continue to help people as much as we can and provide equal opportunities. We know that ‘Knowledge is power’ therefore Babel school wants to be there for those who need to access knowledge. To sum up, we will always try to do the best for our students.

New programs? We are planning to have Turkish Language & Turkish Cuisine and Turkish language & Turkish Literature courses this year.

What about the future of the industry? How do you think study abroad and international education will change over the next 10 years?

We are always optimist about the future of the industry. Study abroad programs and international education will improve the men and women of the world in terms of politics, education strategies and peace in the world. These study abroad programs are chances to see ‘the others’ and experience different life styles, cultures, traditions…

In the future, the changes in the international education will certainly affect all institutions whether it is a state school and/or university, private school and/or university or language school. International education will be more sensitive and sensible for people. We should find a way to combine ethics, scientific knowledge & metaphysics, conscious and cultural & gender awareness in education. Thanks to the technology, we can provide online lessons, in the past this was impossible. I think, people will still travel abroad by using advancements.
