Incredible experience!

Incredible experience volunteering in Romania! Highly recommend and is a great sample of adult life for those about to move out. Made like-minded friends whom I still keep in contact with after the volunteering and had the satisfaction of knowing the volunteering I was doing was helping the community. I didnt have one negative experience. Food was purchased by the organisers to the accommodation and we could write a list of requests. Everything was close to the accomodation: thrift shops, supermarket, hikes. Only thing I regretted was that I didn't stay longer

Pros
  • Learn a new culture
  • Make friends with similar interests of traveling
  • Impressive on CV
Cons
  • Can be difficult to settle in at first
  • Different language
  • Workload can be high depending on the volunteering job

Loved it!

This experience was soooo fun! I volunteered at the dog shelter and it was such a blast and great to help out. The staff there work so hard and there are so many dogs that need love and care. They’re doing amazing work and it’s so cool to be a part of it. The orientation week we a blast & staff were super friendly and helpful. The accommodation was nice & clean and there are cute cats and a dog that live in the area. The country itself is so picturesque it’s like being in a fairytale. Would definitely recommend!

Supportive and organised

IVHQ is a well organised and helpful organisation, they made me very prepared for volunteering overseas, and I felt supported along the way. The organisation they partnered with (Care2Travel) were also very organised and kind, I always felt safe and supported with the food and accommodation. I had an incredible time there. There were many events and clubs organised by the volunteers (one every night of the week), where I got to meet local people I wasn’t working with and have conversations. The local teachers I worked with were so encouraging and kind, I will miss working with them and the kids there.

Pros
  • Organised
  • Social
  • Supportive
Cons
  • The town is very cold in the winter!

First time, no regrets!

This was my first time leaving the US, and volunteering abroad. I’ve known about IVHQ since 2018 but had to undergo some personal character development before I finally rose to the occasion. And I’m so happy I went with IVHQ! They prepared me well so I didn’t have any surprises on my trip and during my volunteer time. Even though I felt nervous, as first-times usually are, the preparation I had was key to my success. The experience was so enlightening, life-changing, and touching. Everyone I volunteered with was an amazing human being.. I felt immediately connected to them. I highly recommend volunteering with IVHQ for US citizens as it’s not commonplace like it is in Germany or Spain for high school graduates to volunteer abroad, and they are very helpful not only to the volunteers, but to so many needy communities all over the globe. I am already planning another trip next year.

Pros
  • Positively life changing
  • Bringing value to communities
  • Connections with wonderful people
Cons
  • Bring 2 pairs of shoes! Lol

English teaching in Romania

I cannot write anything higher than how perfect this project was. I had time to do anything and everything!
My instructor always made sure to check on me and my roommates and we all got along amazingly. The schools I got to teach at were so loving and grateful it made me so sad to leave them.
I felt so valued at this site from all the amazing people I got to be with. The food in Romania is fantastic and the affordability knocked me on my back.
I was so glad there was a way to go on a humanitarian trip without spending overwhelming amounts of money.

Pros
  • Amazing food
  • Everything is so cheap
  • Safe streets at night
Cons
  • Zero nightlife other than sad run down clubs
  • Jet lag

Very Underrated Romania

Romania came as a surprise to me. As a European myself, I never was very interested in going to East Europe, so I didn't have very high expectations. I mainly decided to go because it was one of the safest places to go with the pandemic going on. But, once I was there, all my presumptions were shattered. I got to meet very nice and open Romanian and Hungarian people, learn about its rich history, visit its beautiful castles and cities, and hike through mesmerizing mountains.

Moreover, the volunteering experience was very rewarding. I did everything I could to make myself useful to a local NGO as a NGO Support Volunteer with IVHQ. My aim was to start my journey to understand how NGOs work, while helping out one with a memorable cause: to provide educational and fun summer camps to disadvantaged children. Among other things, I got to help them out with the online marketing for a crowdfunding campaign, write a blog post about one of my adventures in Romania, conduct interviews, snap pictures of the summer camps and help build a space to hold these camps for children on rainy days.

Altogether, it was a great experience that I wouldn't change for anything and one which made me see a part of the world with new eyes.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Obviously I couldn't choose one thing as the most surprising, but I can tell you a fun story that I would never have imagined happening when I signed up for the trip.

From the get-go, I met a lot of incredible local people and connected with the other volunteers of the accommodation (people from Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Italy...). We never stopped hanging out, normally at a bar close to the accommodation. One day, a local girl was having a party in a town an hour from the city we were in, in a rented house in the middle of nowhere. We decided to go, and, casually, we found ourselves driving one night through the mountains, in a convertible car with the roof down and blasting music to get us warmed up for the party. Once we got there, there were a lot of other local people that I hadn't met yet and we just got down to business: dancing all night as if we knew each other since we were little kids, not caring about the culture or language barriers. Everybody ended up sleeping in that house. When I woke up, at around 7 AM with the beautiful colors of the rising sun, I took a walk around the house while everyone was sleeping and it hit me: "how surreal is this moment?".
