Thumbs up

I signed up for the course on a whim not knowing at all what to expect. .The TEFL course at Spevacek language school was not canceled due to the COVID 19 as many other courses were.
The course was demanding and intensive but we, my fellow student and I, had the full undivided attention of our trainers. They were extremely competent and dedicated to sharing their knowledge and experience with us. What I found really helpful was the fact that after each real student teaching lesson( a total of 9 taught lessons), our trainers would give us a detailed, verbal and written comprehensive feedback, helping us, gradually, progress to the best possible performance. I will recommend this school to my friends without any doubt that they will get the best bang for the buck. It is not always the case.

My overall experience is a positive one

What would you improve about this program?
the school headquarters could have been located on a less frequented street as the noise level was at times a bit overwhelming but then, on the other hand, it is just next to the subway station.

Rigoureus but rewarding

This course is not easy but you will leave being able to do the job. The staff is very friendly and you will meet so many people you can lean on for support. While it may feel that they throw you into the fire too quick, it truly is the best way to get you ready and no matter how bad you feel they all want to see you succeed and to improve, which you will if you listen. Tasci helped me to understand English better than ever before. Tereza is one of the most knowledgeable people about teaching you’ll meet. Gwyneth and Martin each understand the realities of teaching in Prague and how to beat make it work.

Challenging but rewarding

The LIVE TEFL course was challenging and stressful, primarily due to the sheer quantity of material covered in the month and the limited time available to absorb it before applying it in front of a classroom. However, the high level of support from the staff and educators and the quality of resources made available to students was a great help in successfully completing the course. Additionally, the pedagogical framework provided, the 'insider knowledge' imparted by the educators and the comprehensive feedback given at the conclusion of every lesson taught were also very useful mechanisms to support students. All in all, the course was very rewarding and has given me the tools to successfully begin my TEFL career in the Czech Republic.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you are a native English speaker with limited exposure to English grammar, familiarise yourself with grammatical structures prior to the course. Remember, it is only a month!

Great TEFL Experience!

Before coming to Prague, I'd worked in the medical field for about 7 years. Having no clue what to do next, I skimmed through travel blogs and brainstormed ideas for the future, and landed on the LiveTEFL Prague website. I'd been to Prague a number of times, so choosing the location was easy. It's a beautiful city with a rich history (and great public transportation). For me, the hard part was deciding which TEFL program to attend. After watching a number of videos on so (so) many language school websites, I decided to apply to LiveTEFL because of its good reviews and location. I was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of information available on the website and the quick response from their team. In no time, I was signed up for the course and contacted numerous times to discuss accommodations and any questions/concerns I had about the program.

As for the actual TEFL program, it's one of the most challenging things I've done in my life. It's one month and very intense, so you're likely to have a melt down or two. Be prepared to teach lessons by the second week and be seriously exhausted by the fourth. Don't worry, though! The teachers and staff are very friendly and supportive, and (if you listen to their suggestions) you'll acquire the necessary skills to succeed as an English teacher. If you're lucky you'll run into previous TEFL students in the teacher's room who do a great job at boosting confidence and reassuring you that you'll survive. (And you will!) During the program, you not only have the support of the LiveTEFL instructors and staff, but you also have access to visa support and job advice from previous students and Spěváček teachers.

All in all, I would highly recommend the LiveTEFL program to anyone considering TEFL courses in Prague.

Cheers,
Ann

LIVE TEFL

I recommend the LiveTEFL program in Prague for various reasons. If you do not have any teaching experience prior to the program, it prepares you well to teach once the program is over. You get to do a lot of teaching practice during the program, so that you don't feel overwhelmed and lost when you finally start teaching outside of the program. The course is very intense because it is essentially 6 months worth of material squeezed into 1 month. But if you keep working hard and taking it day by day, time will fly by. Prague itself is a beautiful city and there is so much to do and explore.

I will say that depending on how many people are in your TEFL course, the guaranteed job placement can be competitive and you may have to look for a job on your own. However, there are plenty of English teaching jobs throughout the Czech Republic and it should not be hard to find one.

Good Luck!

Why did you choose this program?

Even though I am from India and a non-native speaker of the language, I have been fortunate enough to learn the language and have its influence on me since I was a 3 years old. But there are others who are not that lucky. Through this course, I would be able to help others and impart them with the knowledge that I have. TEFL will allow me to reach the various corners of the world and teach English. Apart from teaching, TEFL give me an opportunity to travel to various countries, to know about their culture and their language which will allow me to grow and have a much wider perspective of the world.

TEFL combines the best of both worlds-teaching and traveling.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Live TEFL was helpful in regards to the entire procedure of the pre-post departure. They initiated with the pre-departure cab booking for a reasonable cost. To post departure arranging accommodation for me, one of the staffs of the course came to receive me prior to introducing to my flat and also making me familiar with the neighborhood. The sweetest thing that the director of the course did was to arrange a map for me regards to reaching the school which only made my stay easier with a sweet letter of welcome.

Even though I was told about the neighborhood grocery shop and the bus stop. What I had organized on my own was the battle of communication with the locals. But, I had learned google translator was my best friend and that kind of helped me during my initial days to unlock myself.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

The one piece of advice that I would like to give would be "remember to buy an adapter" the European one. Which is the most important one, since your entire work is on Laptop. Also, don't carry a large amount of cash in your wallet. As fancy can Prague sound, it is also a hub for theft and robbery. So, it is best if you carry your card instead. It's always a safer option.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Since its a 130 hour program, it could be little hectic and sometimes you might feel like to give up, But trust me when I say this, it's all worth it. This course is beautifully crafted to perfection. So, your day starts at 8:30 am in the morning and its done by 5:30 to 6 pm if I may say so. But wait, there is catch to it, it is not over for the TEFL trainees because we have to prepare lesson planning with reference to books in the fully loaded library. Which is fun!!!!!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

LANGUAGE was the biggest fear for me, which lead to a series of fear like communication, addressing an issue about something in my flat. But, the problem was only temporary, I got used to the announcement and knew where my stop is. Also, google translator helped. I guess even going up to person and asking for help isn't a bad thought, I know I did it. It worked :)

What is your favorite travel memory?

After so many years of traveling, I don’t know if I can pick just one! I enjoy traveling to all different kinds of places and doing a variety of things while I am there. These days I prefer traveling to see natural beauty and visiting friends, rather than sightseeing in big cities. Some of my favorite memories have been hiking trips with my family, mostly my father. We have done some beautiful hikes all over the world, from our local Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, to the Inca Trail in Peru, high up in the Himalaya, as well as some beautiful hikes here in Europe. One of our most recent trips together was a hike from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland. It was a very demanding trip, zigzagging across the Alps, but the views made it worth it!

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I believe that everyone is constantly changing and hopefully constantly growing, so of course teachers are no exception. Before I started working as a teacher trainer with Live TEFL I had been teaching English for many years, as well as teacher training for a couple years at another TEFL school in Prague. Each job I’ve had has taught me something unique. I think being a teacher trainer is a great job to have for my own personal growth, because I am forced to constantly learn about new methods and approaches to teaching that I might not otherwise learn if I were doing normal classroom teaching. Teacher training “keeps me on my toes” and prevents me from becoming a lazy teacher who is set in her ways.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

At Live TEFL I focus on teaching our TEFL students about English grammar and phonology, as well as how they can teach this information to their own future students. Many students, especially those who are English native speakers, have never studied English grammar, and find it quite difficult to wrap their heads around so much new information in such a short period of time. It is very rewarding for me when past students, who had often struggled with learning the grammar during the TEFL course, tell me that now they love teaching grammar. These students often go on to teach English all over the world, and I love hearing about their different experiences.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

The biggest factor in becoming a successful company is making sure the employees feel secure and enjoy working for the company. If the employees are not happy, they will not make the customers happy, and none of them will want to continue working for or with that company. There needs to a friendly working atmosphere and a high level of respect between all members of the company. The more satisfied the employees are, the longer they will want to stay with a company. These long-term employees will become more skilled at their jobs, and they will bring more profit to the company than a high employee turnover rate would.
