Great Experience!

I would highly recommend getting your TEFL certification with Maximo Nivel in Antigua Guatemala! Wayne was a fantastic TEFL trainer, he provided us the knowledge and resources to become confident teachers. He always made class exciting and engaging. We received valuable experience both observing ESL classrooms and student teaching. Maximo Nivel also placed me in a fantastic home stay with a friendly family near the school. Additionally, there was ample opportunity to improve our Spanish during the program.

Enjoyable, nerdy way to spend a month in Cusco

I've had in on my bucket list for a while to take a Spanish course while living abroad, so this year when Hollywood went on strike and I had some free months on hand, it felt like the time!

Maximo Nivel was a great touchstone for me as a solo traveler. I was able to arrange my housing and my Spanish classes through them, and book most of my travel through their partner, American Inca Trail.

Some info/additional context for others looking into the program:
Maximo Nivel offers several programs. Some people will be volunteering, some will be taking Spanish, some will be teaching English, and many will be doing a mixture of those things. I'm in my mid-thirties, but since most people are doing this program as a gap year or through their college, the majority age is 16-22. Everyone is super fun and nice, but I did feel a little old sometimes lol.

Spanish Classes:
I never had anyone at my level the 4 weeks I was there, so I had 4 hours private the whole time. Thankfully I was able to meet friends through my travels and housing. My teacher was super friendly and personable. The curriculum is pretty basic and kinda just a grammar dump, but combined with conversation time, I did improve a lot over my 4 weeks.

Housing:
When I read "host family" I thought I'd be having meals with a family, but that's not the setup for most of the hosts. In general, they're housing 8-10 students and you eat with the other students. However, they're also available to chat, give recommendations, and are super nice and helpful. The rooms/accommodations are humble, but clean and safe. The meals prepared were delicious. One note is that I requested a single room and was assigned to shared room when I arrived - Maximo was quick to transfer me when I notified them of the mistake.

Really great TEFL certification with Wayne Summerbell and Maximo-Nivel

Maximo Nivel's TEFL program is a thorough training in how to teach students English through immersion without the use of their native language. At every opportunity, Maximo uses the techniques you will be using as an ESL teacher to teach you what you need to know for certification. This double-dose of the essential techniques is an incredible learning tool that will allow you to independently teach real ESL classes to students by the fourth week of your course.
Students coming to Maximo Nivel will be particularly lucky if they can get Wayne Summerbell as a teacher. He is an extremely competent and approachable instructor. I can't imagine receiving better help while navigating my strengths and weakness to become an independent teacher of English as a second language.

Pros
  • An extremely effective and entertaining teacher in Wayne Summerbell.
  • Professional and constantly available support from the Maximo Nivel staff.
  • Comfortable facilities with great views of the city.
Cons
  • Shared quarters, semi-open living quarters with adventure travelers with different sleep schedules and acceptable noise levels.
  • Just simple and expected issues of living in a developing country like needing to purchase all potable water.
  • No crash course on Guatemalan history. It might behoove USA students to know the oversized role their government played in creating the poverty and inconveniences they will witness.

So much fun

Everyday I’m so happy to be at the daycare with the kids, they teach me so much and vice versa. The highlight of my morning is when I get there I get “ambushed” with hugs and good mornings. Honestly they are the most lovable people in the whole world. The staff at los ositos have been very helpful and welcoming. Also the kids love it if you smile at them it makes them feel happy and gives them like extra energy for the day. But honestly working with the kids makes you have to have extra energy..

Pros
  • Amazing staff
  • Everyone tries when it comes to the so-called language barrier
  • So happy
Cons
  • Sometimes it’s hard to get around at first

Excellent course!!

I am a Family Nurse Practitioner who decided to make a career change. I thoroughly investigated the different TEFL courses available and chose Maximo Nivel. I completed the hybrid course in August in Antigua, Guatemala due to my demanding job as a Nurse Practitioner. I was definitely challenged! When I attended the on-site portion, I immediately realized the rigor of the program. I was impressed with Wayne Summerbell, the TEFL instructor. He is passionate, knowledgeable, supportive, and gives excellent feedback. I enjoyed the students so much and have found a new passion! This program is amazing! Wayne Summerbell is an asset to Maximo Nivel and honestly, I can say the time I spent in Antigua with him and my fellow students will be some of most cherished memories!

These are in-depth Q&A sessions with verified alumni.

Why did you choose this program?

I wanted an opportunity to change my career path from a dissatisfying corporate job to a rewarding career that can take me traveling around the world and enable me to gain cultural experiences in different diverse countries whilst helping others in learning a 2nd language to enable better job opportunities.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The Maximo Nivel program provided me with top quality information travel assistance, support staff and teachers who were extremely knowledgeable and made the whole experience extremely worthwhile.

They organized my volunteer program and also the accommodation at my host family, and assisted with holiday and activity options.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

If I were to do the course again, I would definitely choose a professional organization that is well-credentialed and respected like Maximo. It makes it so much easier having a strong support base and experienced team.

I would definitely allow for more travel time either before or after the course, so you can get to appreciate the country you are visiting.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The program is very solid and lots to fit in every day, as it is a compact course.

Having said that, there were still afternoons off and a couple of free days to chill. And an average day consisted of about 8 hours at school with a mixture of theory and practical class observations and activities.

After school, you would generally need to do 2 hours of homework or reading.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

I guess my only fear was not finishing the course or not being able to do the assignments and lesson plans in time. But the course structure and support of the teachers was a huge benefit in allaying my fears. This made a big difference in my ability to manage the course effectively and get everything done.

Any last thoughts?

This is a really fun and rewarding opportunity. It is full-on but satisfying in so many ways. You learn so much about yourself and build up comradery with people from all over the world, with diverse backgrounds and age ranges. It will give you great confidence and belief that you can do whatever you want to set your mind to.

What is your favorite travel memory?

Visiting Panama is definitely my most memorable travel experience. It was my first time traveling alone and I met a lot of new people. Seeing new places, experiencing a new culture and being by myself for the first time was amazing.

I participated in a lot of tours and activities and I learned a lot. This experience motivated me to keep travelling.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would love to be part of the Mini Adventure program in Guatemala. I have always wanted to go to Tikal and learn more about the Mayan Culture in Guatemala.

I feel the Mini Adventure gives you the opportunity to visit really nice places in Guatemala in a short period of time.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I feel proud of my team every time we happily adapt to last minute changes in order to make the participants experience be awesome and unforgettable.
