Teach English in Rwanda

Rwanda has been making significant progress since the horrendous genocide that ravaged the country and its economy. Today, Rwanda is a growing country that attracts thousands of tourists annually. In addition, Rwanda has made significant improvements to its educational system, meaning there are plenty of opportunities for you to teach abroad there!

Public Schools:

Jobs in public schools are available as the government starts its push for better quality. Most jobs will most likely be found in the major cities however, they can also be found in rural areas.

Private Schools:

Schools like Kigali International Community School are in serious need for quality teachers. More specifically, they’re looking for teachers who can teach English. Private schools are a great option for teaching in Rwanda as pay is usually higher and conditions are better.

Education in Rwanda in general:

The government has made a significant push to improve the quality and accessibility of education in the country. Rwanda now provides education for free for primary school, which has resulted in high attendance. There is a shortage of quality teachers so the need is great.

When and Where to Look for Jobs:

It is possible to get a job at virtually at any time of the year. However most students start school around January, so looking for a job a few months before that is advisable. You will most likely find a job in the major cities of Rwanda such as Kigali.

Qualifications:

Some programs will require bachelors’ degrees and TEFL certificates; there are many programs that do not require them. There will be the expectation that the teacher is at least a native speaker or has equivalent ability.

Salary & Cost of Living:

Most of the jobs you will encounter are going to be unpaid. If the job is paid, don’t expect a big paycheck- a couple hundred dollars a month maximum. That being said, cost of living in Rwanda is very low, making it relatively easy to get by on a low wage. For example, a one-bedroom apartment in the city will generally run about three hundred dollars a month.

Classroom & Work Culture:

Culture will vary depending on school to school. However, most classrooms will have a fairly relaxed atmosphere. The environment in the classroom will largely depend on the teacher, so it will up to you to set the tone!
